Who We Are

Greene County Genealogical & Historical Society is a non-profit organization that is operated by kind volunteers who are dedicated to the preservation of Greene County's rich history. We house a well-rounded variety of information that dates back to early generations of Greene County families and historical records.

As a non-profit organization, our support derives from membership fees and book sales. We encourage you to explore our online store and get involved by joining our society. You can also make a tax deductible donation. As always, any support you may offer is greatly appreciated.

The History Of Greene County

Greene County was formed on November 5, 1833 out of portions of Lawrence County, Clay and Craighead counties. Greene county was named after Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene; the original county seat resided in Benjamin Crowley’s home.

Greene County is nestled in the northeast section of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of today, it's population stands at approximately 42,090. The heart of Greene County and also the county seat, is Paragould which resides just beyond Crowley's Ridge. The Paragould Statistical Area includes all of Greene County and it is also part of the larger Jonesboro–Paragould Combined Statistical Area.

The first settler to the area was Benjamin Crowley (1758-1842) of Kentucky who arrived in 1821 and established a home about 12 miles west of Paragould.

Our Mission

“To preserve, publish, educate and make available as much Greene County Arkansas historical and familial information as possible.”

At Greene County Genealogical & Historical Society, we love to be active participants in our community! As shown in the photo above, we help organize causes that preserve history by marking locations with signs and participating in events like Civil War reenactments.
